As the NCDOT Mechanical Engineering Program is at the forefront of alternative fuels research, I have managed the team that has worked to test NCDOT's F59PH and F59PHI locomotive's EMD 710 prime mover engines and CAT C18 head end power auxiliary engines under various blends of biodiesel. These tests have been conducted with blends from 20% up to 100%. Our team has worked closely with North Carolina State University Department of Environmental Engineering to test locomotive emissions for NOx, CO2, and particulate matter levels to ensure post rebuild compliance to federally mandated emissions for Tier 0+ and Tier II.
My experience in alternative fuels also extends to the development of dual fuel systems for F59PH locomotives utilizing ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and compressed natural gas (CNG) or biodiesel blends and CNG. My team creates specifications, conducts research, and composes grant documents for NCDOT in preparation for the launch of the dual fuel locomotive program.
