My experience with retrofits of railcars extends outside of NCDOT where I have managed the Great Lakes Central Railroad (GLCRR) Bi-Level Gallery Car restroom system upgrade project. Due to the nature of these cars and their original construction, they lacked wheelchair accessible restroom facilities which are required by Federal law for intercity trains. GLCRR called on my group to design and source a restroom module system, waste system, and water supply system to retrofit into their fleet of twenty cars. I designed a complete system which has been installed in one test car and is currently in final installation stages. As required by Federal regulations, a full 8g loading analysis was required to be submitted for the undercar waste tank and supports and the interior water tank and support.
